The Adonis Complex

Listen via Real Audio
From GI Joe to pro wrestling, to magazines to movies, everywhere we look, we see muscular, fit men. Millions of men and boys are feeling pressured to achieve the impossible goal of physical perfection. Men are spending countless hours in the gym, young boys are taking food supplements and diet aids, and many are using dangerous anabolic steroids and black market equivalents to push the limits of their physiques. More and more men are suffering from eating disorders; a recent study found that 40% of Americans who go on compulsive eating sprees are men.. Dr. Dan Gottlieb will be joined by Dr. Michael J. Pertschuck, the medical director of the eating disorders program at Friends Hospital and Dr. Harrison G. Pope, one of the authors of "The Adonis Complex: The Secret Crisis of Male Body Obsession".

Fathers and Daughters

Listen via Real Audio
The importance of caring and involved fathers has been emphasized in many books, movies, and advertisements lately, but oftentimes the message is focused on the relationships between fathers and sons. But many researchers argue that fathers have a strong influence on how a girl grows into womanhood, how she feels about herself, and what kinds of relationships she develops with men. Join us for a special father's day edition of Voices in the Family when we'll explore the special bond between fathers and daughters. We are joined by Jonetta Rose Barras, author of "Whatever Happened to Daddy's Little Girl."

Adolescence

Listen via Real Audio
The beginning of the teenage years often marks the end of a good parent-child relationship. The adolescent feels misunderstood, the parents feel as if nothing they say matters. But during a recent White House conference, experts concluded that parents can have a much bigger impact on their teens than previously assumed. Join Dr. Dan Gottlieb for a conversation with Laura Sessions Stepp, author of "Our Last Best Shot." They will explore how parents can maintain a working relationship with their children during this important time. Later on in the show, we'll talk about the challenges that gay and lesbian youth face with Dr. Carrie Jacobs, executive director of "The Attic" in Philadelphia.

Understanding Your Child's Temperament

Listen via Real Audio
Did you ever wonder why two children, raised in the same family and environment can be so very different? Why one is prone to fits of rage and the other mild-mannered and peaceful? Are these things predetermined or learned? Join Dr. Gottlieb for a discussion on children's temperaments as well as some breakthrough approaches to better understand your child's behavior. He will be joined by Dr. William B. Carey, clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Director of Behavioral Pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Carey is also the author of "Understanding your Child's Temperament," a new approach to parenting, based on nine temperamental traits inborn in every child.
