Suicide
Listen
via Real Audio Imagine waking up one morning to find that a loved one is gone. Not because of an accident, an illness, or a random act of violence, but by his or her own hand. This nightmare scenario is a reality for the family members of suicide victims all across America every day. In the United States, a suicide is committed every 17 minutes, most by people under the age of 40.
Last month in Delaware County alone, two teenagers and a twelve year old child took their own lives. The families and friends are left with grief, questions, and feelings of guilt. Dr. Dan Gottlieb explores the latest research in the field of suicide and suicide prevention with Dr. Howard Sudak of Pennsylvania Hospital and Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison, author of "Night Falls Fast". They will discuss risks, warning signs and how families are affected by suicide.

The Waiting List
Listen
via Real Audio What happens when the families of mentally retarded people are too old or sick to care for them any longer? Who gives them the daily assistance that they require to live their lives? The fact is, thousands of people with mental disabilities and their families are in crisis. Their search for in-home supports and appropriate community-based residential programs for their relatives seems endless. People all over the United States have formed groups to fight for better services for people with mental retardation. The Pennsylvania "Waiting List Campaign" recently scored a victory when Governor Ridge appropriated five million additional dollars in the budget to expand services.
Our guest is Maureen Devaney, she is the task force chairperson for the Pennsylvania Waiting List Campaign. We'll also Fred Patterson, spokesperson for The Arc of the United States, an organization for people with mental retardation.

Learning: An Adventure
Listen
via Real Audio More and more children are diagnosed with learning disorders. Doctors are prescribing stimulants such as Ritalin and antidepressants like Prozac for children as young as four and five. Children report that they are bored in school; teachers complain that most children can't sit still for a minute. Is their lack of focus attributed to mental disorders or do we need to take a different approach to learning? We'll discuss whether our schools can meet the needs of today's children, and look at different places that are dedicated to making learning fun. We'll visit the Rosa International Middle School in Cherry Hill, N.J. and the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia, and hear from educators and children how learning could be made what it should be; an adventure.
