Career Changes after Fifty
Listen
via Real Audio
One baby boomer turns fifty every eight seconds. Many of them are expected to work well past the age of 65. So what if, at the age of fifty, you want to pursue another career, a new and meaningful venture, or a job you have long dreamed to have? What if you have been down-sized, or forced into early retirement but are not ready to throw the towel yet?
Dr. Dan Gottlieb is joined by career counselors Ruth Campbell and Joseph Cipolla who teach a career workshop for people over fifty at Delaware County Community College.
We'll also hear from people who have changed careers after the age of fifty.

Reconcilable Differences
Listen
via Real Audio
It's that time of year again, when heart-shaped candy boxes and the card industry remind us how relationships should be. We all know that relationships are not as simple as the poems on the greeting cards, and that arguments and struggles are a part of every day life for most couples. But what if these quarrels threaten to break the relationship apart? Our guest, Dr. Andrew Christensen, argues that instead of trying to change, partners have to learn to accept each other. Christensen argues that acceptance does not mean resignation, but leads to a better understanding of your partner. Christensen is a professor of Psychology at the University of California, and the author of "Reconcilable Differences." Dan is also joined by local family and marital therapist Sandy Covelman. This is also our membership drive edition of Voices in the Family, so be sure to show your support for Voices and WHYY!

Getting Truant Children Back Into School
Listen
via Real Audio
Truancy is at an all-time high; in some big cities, truancy rates are reaching 30%, and many of these children end up dropping out of school altogether. Often, kids skipping school get themselves into trouble, and are led to crime. Delaware County is taking a ground-breaking approach to cutting down truancy and getting children back into schools. The Truancy And Delinquency Prevention Program was officially launched in December, and combines the efforts of schools, and human service and mental health agencies. The program was in a trial phase last year, and out of the 100 students who participated, 58 returned to school, and two are taught at home. Dr. Dan Gottlieb is joined by the several members of the program, and they will explore what parents, communities, and service agencies can do to cut down on truancy and prevent juvenile crime.

Reinventing the Black Male Image
Listen
via Real Audio
Sex is always a hot topic in this country, it sells products and ideas,
it's talked about on the news, in talk shows, and it's in virtually every
movie. But many important issues surrounding sexuality are not talked
about. Very little research has been done on the sexuality of African
American men, and most of the information we hear is based on myths and
stereotypes. In his book, "More than Sex," Dr. George Smith argues that
the myths about black men's sexuality have had a devastating impact on the
black community. Smith explores what factors are detrimental to
relationships between black men and women, and how black men can work to
have fulfilled relationships.
