Under Your Skin
Listen
via Real Audio
For thousands of years, humans have used their skin to express themselves, to mark the passing of milestones in their lives, or to declare their belonging to a certain group.
In our society today, tattooing, piercing, and many other forms of body alteration are more popular than ever.
While most of these things are done as a form of beautification and self-expression, there is also an increase of cutting, especially among teenage girls. We'll hear from a woman who cut her skin for years while going through deep inner turmoil. We'll explore the fine line between body alteration and self-mutilation.
We'll also hear from an expert on tattooing and piercing, and an anthropologist who will talk about the different meanings of body alteration.

Borderline Personality Disorder

Lady Diana is said to have suffered from Borderline Personality Disorder, and more and more women are diagnosed with it. Some of the symptoms are irrational fear of abandonment, aggressiveness, and a distorted sense of self. But many experts argue that this is a politically charged and anti-feminist diagnosis; they claim that many women are diagnosed with BPD not because they suffer from it, but because they may be perceived as aggressive or difficult. We'll explore how this disorder and how it affects people suffering from it and their families. We will also discuss the controversies surrounding the issue.

Loneliness in Childhood and Adolescence
Listen
via Real Audio As the recent wave of violence in American schools sent shock waves through every community, everybody was wondering what kind of child or teen might be driven to commit such horrible crimes against classmates and teachers. While the perpetrators were very different from one another, they seemed to have one thing in common; they were described as "loners".
There are children who are perfectly fine being alone, while in others, loneliness seems to have a negative effect on development. We'll explore how parents can determine the difference, and when a child's loneliness should sound the alarm for parent or teacher.
We'll also see why certain parenting styles actually contribute to a child's loneliness.
Dan Gottlieb's guest will be Dr. Shelly Hemel, editor of "Loneliness in Childhood and Adolescence".

Ask the Children

This is the question author Ellen Galinsky set out to answer. She interviewed over one thousand children of working parents, and the answers she received will surprise you. Just for example, it's not more time most children want, it's more money!
