Children's Stories
Listen via
Real Audio
All Children tell stories, some are funny, others sad, but they are always
full of imagination. Can these stories tell us anything about our
children, their personalities, fears, hopes and wishes? Susan Engel,
author of "The Stories Children Tell," argues that in constructing
stories, children are constructing themselves. She will join us to explore
what parents can learn from listening o children's stories.
We will also discuss language development in infants with Dr. Kathy Hirsh
Pasek of Temple University's Infant Language laboratory.

Adolescents and Sexuality
Listen
via Real Audio
The movie "American Pie" may be a funny summer blockbuster, and audiences
find it hilarious to watch a group of high school seniors struggle on
their quest to lose their virginity. But reality is not so amusing.
Despite readily available birth control and sex education, the United
States have the highest teenage pregnancy rate among the industrial
countries. One quarter of teenage women report that their first sexual
intercourse was unwanted, every year, 3 million teens acquire an STD, and
almost one million teenage women become pregnant. Many adolescents report
being confused about sex, and parents often don't know how to talk to
their children about sex.
We'll hear from teens who will share their opinions on sex, safe sex,
birth control, abstinence, and struggles with peer pressure. We'll also be
joined by two psychologists who will discuss how and why parents should
discuss sex with their adolescents.

Back to School
Listen
via Real Audio
Every September, we send our
children back to school. Sometimes with
sadness, and sometimes with relief, but this year, it feels different. The
recent school shootings tell us that their world is more violent, and as
much as we want to promise them that they will be safe, we can't. Dr. Dan
Gottlieb will discuss with Dr. Myrna Shure how we can send our children
off to school in a way that's good for them and us. He'll also explore a
controversial book "Dangerous Schools" with author Dr. Irwin Hyman. While
most people are demanding harsher disciplinary measures and more control
in schools, Hyman argues that these measures create an environment
detrimental to learning and our children's mental health.
