Family Reunions
Listen
via Real Audio
Summer is traditionally the time for family reunions, and Voices in the
Family will give you another opportunity to listen to our program on this
topic. Visitors in Philadelphia^"s parks find hundreds of people gathered
in different groups, distinguished by T-shirts and signs with their family
name on it.
We might wonder what good one day spent with distant relatives can do -
what is the significance, do people really stay in touch, and feel that
they are one big family? We^"ll explore why it is important to understand
where we come from and to see where our family is going.

We'll open the lines for our listeners to call-in with any questions that
are psychological in nature.

Living To 100
Listen
via Real Audio
They were born on the eve of the Twentieth Century. They have lived
through two World Wars, and the Cold War. They have seen our society
change fundamentally, and somehow adapted to everything that happened in
the last 100 years. They are centenarians, and they are the world's
fastest growing age group. Currently, there are about 50,000 people over
100 in the United States alone. We'll speak with Dr. Margery Silver,
psychologist and co-author of "Living to 100." The book chronicles the
lessons we can learn from centenarians, and explores the factors that
contribute to living a long, healthy life. The book also describes the
fulfilled and happy lives many centenarians are enjoying. So be sure to
join us and find out how you can sail through life well into your ninth
and tenth decade!

Extreme Shyness
Listen
via Real Audio
Most of us have probably struggled with shyness at one point in our lives.
Maybe we just stood in a corner at a party rather than trying to meet
people. Maybe we didn't accept an invitation that we really wanted to,
usually, though, we manage to get over our fear or reluctance. But for
people suffering from extreme shyness, social phobia, this feeling is much
more than a fleeting fear. Social phobia can paralyze people's social lives, and
limit their careers and work performance. The disorder was formally
identified in 1980, and an estimated 19 million Americans are affected.
Pharmaceutical companies are trying to get medications approved for the
treatment of social phobia; for example the anti-depressant "Paxil" was
recently approved by the FDA for this purpose. But many therapists argue
that drugs are not the answer in the treatment of social phobia. We'll
hear from local experts and people affected by social phobia, and we'll
also get the latest research in the field from the National Institute of
Mental Health.
