Reinventing Ourselves after Motherhood
Listen
via Real Audio
We always talk about how parents influence their children, but what's not
talked about is how children change their parents lives - and especially
the lives of mothers.
For most women, motherhood means changes in careers, intimate
relationships, and even identities. Our guest will be Susan E. Lewis, a
career woman who traded a demanding Wall Street position for motherhood
and a writing career. She is the author of "Reinventing Ourselves after
Motherhood." We'll also be joined by Dr. Harriet Lerner, author of "The
Mother Dance."

Fatherhood
Listen
via Real Audio
As we celebrate Father's Day, Voices in the Family will examine fatherhood
as an opportunity for growth and fulfillment. Our guest is Dr. Aaron Hass,
author of "The Gift of Fatherhood." He argues that fathers who take an
active role in their children's lives will have more self-confidence, and
feel happier and more fulfilled.
We will also discuss what responsible fatherhood means, and how
communities, schools, social service agencies and religious and spiritual
centers can get involved in helping fathers to connect and to stay
connected with their children.

Life Behind Bars
Listen
via Real Audio
Voices in the Family will take an in-depth look at life in prison. We will
visit local prisoners and talk about their struggles and fears, as well as
their hopes for the future. What happens to the families of incarcerated
people, and what lessons, if any, can be learned in prison?
Many prisoners suffer from drug addictions, and the Philadelphia
Industrial Correctional Center offers the "Options Program" for a small
portion of the inmates. Here, prisoners receive comprehensive drug
addictions treatment and life skills counseling. We'll talk to prisoners
in the "Options Program," and their counselors.
We will also discuss the factors that contribute to rehabilitation, and
examine why so many
ex-convicts, despite having the best intentions, turn back to crime after
they have been released.
We will also be joined in the studio by a therapist who works with
prisoners and their families.

Cherishing Heritage
Listen
via Real Audio It is WHYY's heritage week, and Voices in the Family will discuss the
psychological implications of immigration. We'll talk to first-generation
immigrants about their struggles, and ask them how they and their families
have changed since they came to America. We'll also take a look at
families who adopted a child from another country. Are those children
being robbed of their heritage, or can the parents find a balance between
teaching them about their heritage of origin, and the new traditions and
customs they will have to learn.
