will talk about finding the right therapist. We have interviewed several
local therapists and asked them about their intake process. We will also

Treatment." Psychiatrist Dr. Howard Dichter, consultant to the federal
government on managed care, will join us to discuss the impact of managed
care on the mental health field.

Bearing Witness - Trauma and Youth Violence
The tragic school shooting in Littleton, Colorado has left most of us in
shock and disbelief. Even after Littleton and last year's series of school
shootings it seems unfathomable that children can turn into vicious
killers. Dr. Sandy Bloom and Dr. Michael Reichert take a new approach at
explaining youth violence in their new book "Bearing Witness." They
discuss the social and psychological issues leading to youth violence, and
argue that we must address the problem as a community that fosters peace
and safety. We will also hear from young Philadelphians who joined efforts
to end youth violence after last year's school shootings.

Cheers and Tears: Children and Sports
Listen via
Real Audio
Playing sports for children is supposed to be fun, and psychologists argue
that it raises self-esteem, and encourages fairness and team play. But add
a couple of overly ambitious parents, coaches and peers and playing sports
can quickly turn into a nightmare. Long practice hours might lead to
injury and take over a student's free time. We hear horror stories of
student wrestlers, fasting and running miles wrapped in plastic bags to
drop weight. Instead of gaining self-esteem, children often feel like
failures when they loose, and many female athletes develop eating
disorders. So how can we encourage our children to play sports without
pushing them too hard?
We will be joined by Dr. Shane Murphy, sport psychologist and former head
of the sport psychology program for the United States Olympic Committee.
He will discuss how parents can ensure that their children's involvement
in sports is healthy and promotes their talents.

Ritalin.

Loss and Grieving
Listen via
Real Audio
As our memorial Day Special, Voices in the Family will give you another
opportunity to listen to our program on Children Grieving. We will also be
joined by Pauline Boss, author of "Ambiguous Loss." Boss discusses how
families can deal with situations where a loved-one is lost, but there is
no closure. A person suffering with severe dementia or mental illness, a
soldier missing in action, or a missing family member may still be alive,
but is no longer with the family. Boss argues that being torn between
hoping and giving up, and the prolonged suffering make it impossible for
people to move on with their lives. Boss offers coping strategies and
guidance for those struggling to regain their lives.
