1999: Technology Center takes WHYY into the digital age

The glass facade of the WHYY Technology Center on Independence Mall in Philadelphia was designed to promote interaction with the community. When visitors approach the building, they can look right into the studios where 91FM programming originates, see through to TV12's Studio 1 and read the latest headlines on a constantly scrolling tickertape.

Part of a $23 million initiative that also established a program endowment and empowered the station with digital capabilities, this state-of-the-art Technology Center resulted from a full-scale renovation of the building WHYY had occupied since 1980. During the renovations, 91FM remained in one wing of the building so their broadcasts would not be disrupted, and eventually transitioned to their current studio and meeting space against the glass windows of the Technology Center.
