1987: NPR decides it needs some Fresh Air

WHYY-FM's own Fresh Air with Terry Gross joined the ranks of the public radio elite when it was picked up for daily distribution by National Public Radio. On May 11, 1987, the program premiered nationally in its current hour-long version, designed as the lead-in to All Things Considered.

Since then, Fresh Air's popularity has skyrocketed -- it won the George Foster Peabody Award
