Bob Edwards (pictured in the late '70s with Jay Kernis (right), now NPR's senior vice president of programming) had been working at NPR for five years when he received a 30-day assignment to host a brand new program, designed to be a "friendly, early-morning companion." That temporary gig evolved into a nearly 25-year stint as host of the critically acclaimed Morning Edition, until Edwards was replaced in 2004.
